Quantitative light-induced fluorescence (QLF) in relation to other technologies and conventional methods for detecting occlusal caries in permanent teeth

چکیده
Aim: The aim of this in vitro study was to compare the reproducibility and accuracy of quantitative light-induced fluorescence (QLF) in relation to other technologies and conventional methods for detecting occlusal carious lesions. Methods: Ninety-six extracted permanent molar teeth were selected. Three examiners carried out examinations using Visual examination (VI), bitewing radiographs (RX), QLF, electrical conductance measurement (ECM), and DIAGNOdent. Twentyfive percent of the teeth were re-examined for repeatability. Stereomicroscopic examination was used as the gold standard. Results: Intraand inter-examiner agreement ranged from 0.43 to 0.89. Areas under ROC curves were 0.82, 0.54, 0.84, 0.79 and 0.88, respectively, for VI, RX, QLF, ECM and DIAGNOdent examinations, with RX significantly lower than the other methods. No significant statistical difference was found when comparing the areas under ROC curve of visual inspection and QLF. Conclusions: Although QLF and other technologies for early caries detection may offer some advantages, this study did not find significant improvement in occlusal caries detection when compared to visual examination.

Clinical performance of fluorescence-based methods for detection of occlusal caries lesions in primary teeth.
We aimed to investigate the performance of fluorescence-based methods (FBMs), compared to visual inspection after histological validation, in detecting and assessing the activity status of occlusal carious lesions in primary teeth. One examiner evaluated 50 primary molars close to exfoliation in 24 children. Teeth were assessed using quantitative light-induced fluorescence (QLF) and pen-type la...

OBJECTIVES Detection of approximal caries lesions can be difficult due to their anatomical position. This study aimed to assess the ability of the quantitative light-induced fluorescence-digital (QLF-D) in detecting approximal caries, and to compare the performance with those of the International Caries Detection and Assessment System II (ICDAS II) and digital radiography (DR). METHODS Extrac...
متن کاملEvaluation of Accuracy of DIAGNOdent in Diagnosis of Primary and Secondary Caries in Comparison to Conventional Methods.
INTRODUCTION Today the prevalence of teeth decays has considerably decreased. Related organizations and institutions mention several reasons for it such as improvement of decay diagnostic equipment and tools which are even capable of detecting caries in their initial stages. This resulted in reduction of costs for patients and remarkable increase in teeth life span. There are many methods for d...
متن کاملComparison of QLF and DIAGNOdent for quantification of smooth surface caries.
The aim was to compare the detection and quantification of smooth surface caries by KaVo DIAGNOdent and quantitative laser/light-induced fluorescence (QLF) using a laser and a lamp as two different light sources. On 40 premolar teeth extracted from adolescents, 71 non-cavitated approximal surfaces were assessed. For QLF, both mean and maximum fluorescence losses were registered. To provide a go...
متن کاملDiagnosis of occlusal caries: Part II. Recent diagnostic technologies.
Accurate diagnosis of the presence or absence of disease is a fundamental requirement in health care. The diagnosis of non-overt occlusal decay is challenging and can be highly subjective, and its inherent uncertainties can lead to widely differing treatment decisions. The purpose of this 2-part paper is to review current knowledge concerning conventional and new diagnostic methods for occlusal...
